New Canaan’s reputation for having some of the finest public schools in Connecticut certainly wasn’t diminished by the 2021 rankings released recently by Public School Review.

All three of New Canaan’s public elementary schools were ranked among the top 5, with West Elementary receiving the top ranking. South Elementary was ranked No. 4, while East School was tied at No. 5 with two other schools.

Saxe Middle School in New Canaan was ranked No. 2 among the state’s middle schools, while New Canaan High School was ranked fifth among the state’s high schools.

Public School Review provides free profiles of public schools in every state. It evaluates a number of metrics to determine its rankings, including test scores and teacher-to-student ratios. The rankings are meant to be helpful to parents who are moving to new communities or exploring pre-college education options.

The New Canaan Public Schools response to the COVID-19 pandemic and approach to their reopening has also received high praise from the community.

West Elementary achieved the top ranking because of its incredible student proficiency scores. West students received a 95 percent score in math, and tested between 90 and 94 percent in reading. Both the math and reading scores placed West in the top 1 percent. South School’s scores were 90 percent in math and 88 percent in reading, while East School scored 89 percent in math and 87 percent in reading.

Saxe Middle School students scored 86 percent in math and 88 percent in reading, finishing behind only House of Arts Letters and Science Academy in New Britain.

New Canaan High School students scored 78 percent in math and 89 percent in reading.

In 2019, NCPS was also ranked #1 in Connecticut and in top 1% of public school districts in the U.S.
