October 8, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeFrench New Wave cinema, arguably the single most important movement in post-war film, will be discussed by Professor Nicholas Paige via a live webinar from New Canaan Library on Thursday, October 8 at 7 PM EST. Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration; please register at newcanaanibrary.org.
Fans of film and Francophiles alike will enjoy this unique lecture by Professor Nicholas Paige, PhD. Professor Paige will provide a brief introduction to French New Wave cinema, then rather than review New Wave filmography, he will point to select examples to explore the theoretical, technological, and cultural currents that converged to produce this remarkable source of talent which began around 1959.
Professor Nicholas Paige, who holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, has been teaching in the Department of French at the University of California Berkeley for about 25 years. While he regularly teaches a class on the New Wave, his main research areas lie in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His latest book, a quantitative study of the evolving “novel system” in France and England, is due out at the beginning of 2021. He is currently working on a book about art, literature, and worthlessness over the last five hundred years.
