Whether you’re looking for a good book, need some solitude or quiet time, or want to expose your children to the joys of a spectacular facility, the New Canaan Library is the place to go.

After 10 years of planning, discussion, fundraising, and construction, the new library opened its doors to the public earlier in February of this year. And the reviews have been nothing less than glowing.

The new library was designed to mirror the diverse fabric of the local community and takes inspiration from some of the historic buildings in town as well as a selection of the world’s most unique and renowned libraries.

When you visit, you’ll discover why the library is poised to become a place of profound transformation for both you and your family, presenting innumerable chances for creativity and exploration.

Here are some of the highlights:

Concourse

The shared gathering place for all to convene is the community commons. The Concourse links the entrance on Maple Street to the Library Green, offering a welcome desk, showcasing a selection of the newest books, the Art Lounge for exhibitions, and the new Café.

Children’s Room

Spanning almost 9,000 square feet of sheer enjoyment designed to bolster early literacy and cultivate an enduring passion for education. Encompassing three spacious program rooms, you’ll find comfortable seating, shelves tailored just for children, an outdoor Children’s Garden, and an adjoining Tween Cave.

Teaching Center

A space for culinary demonstrations and interactive learning, catering to adults, teenagers, and children alike. It can be used for intimate learning groups and larger audiences.

Auditorium

An airy 350-seat performance and lecture hall, featuring a movable partition that enables concurrent programming. Exceptional acoustics, adaptable seating, and a flat floor permit numerous arrangements for hosting events and diverse programs.

Living Room

A focal meeting spot on the mezzanine level, highlighted by ample natural light, lofted ceilings, cozy seating, and a huge fireplace. The space is conveniently positioned adjacent to the library’s fiction collection. Additionally, situated on this floor is the MakerLab, an educational facility offering technology, tools, and materials for engaging STEAM learning, inventive issue tackling, and collaborative efforts.

Co-working space and business center

These bright and serene areas for remote work are equipped with public computers and a comprehensive range of business amenities, such as copying, laminating, and printing services.

Private Meeting Rooms

There are nine glass-enclosed rooms available, each with different sizes to host gatherings of as many as 35 people. The primary conference room stands out because it connects directly to the outdoor rooftop terrace where people can meet, enjoy the view, or bask in the sun.

Library Green

Crafted by the renowned Boston-based landscape design firm, Stimson Landscape Architects, this community green area will showcase indigenous flora. It will be used for a variety of outdoor activities including music concerts, theater performances, film screenings, gardening and nature sessions, exercise activities, crafting, and more!

Teen Library

With a view of South Avenue, this is a dedicated space where New Canaan teenagers can have a place of their own to study, collaborate, learn, and embark on explorations.

Event Terrace

A gathering spot in the open air, an event venue, and a gateway to the outdoor activities and recreational opportunities provided by the expansive Library Green, spanning almost one acre.

Rooftop Terrace

A public terrace outdoors, offering vistas of both the Library Green and downtown New Canaan — an ideal location for unwinding, socializing with friends, and partaking in special events.

If you haven’t made it to the new facility yet – now is the time. You’ll enjoy the experience.
