Invest in a one-of-a-kind furniture piece for that special area in your home at a small studio in downtown New Canaan.
Thomas Throop has been designing and crafting unique furniture pieces in New Canaan since opening Black Creek Designs in 2006. His creations are elegant, detailed forms that are visually powerful and serve a functional need for the people who hire him.
Born and raised in New Canaan, Throop became interested in wood working as a child while helping his uncle build boats and restore antique furniture during the summers. He restored homes for several years after graduating from college before making a bold life decision.
Throop decided to move to Dorset, England to attend the John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood. The two-year program is renowned in England and the Makepeace School is considered one of the country’s finest designers and makers of contemporary furniture.
The experience at the Makepeace School exposed Throop to contemporary design and to the ideas grounded in the English arts and crafts movement. He also learned the skills required to make hand-crafted furniture that responds and relates to its surroundings while standing distinctly on its own.
Throop returned to the U.S. from England in 1992 and has specialized in designing and building unique furniture pieces ever since. He has won numerous awards, including one from the prestigious Wharton Esherick Museum, and his work has been featured in several woodworking and design periodicals. He’s also had his work displayed at more than 100 juried exhibitions.
