SUMMARY:“A 20-Year Journey: From 9/11 to Today” to be Presented by Mary Fetchet\, Via Live Webinar from New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is honored to host Mary Fetchet\, Founding Director of Voices Center for Resilience\, who will deliver the talk “A 20-year Journey: From 9/11 to Today” via live videoconference on Tuesday\, September 7 at 6 PM EST. Ms. Fetchet\, a New Canaan resident for 33 years and mother of Brad Fetchet\, who died in the September 11 attacks\, will discuss her journey over the past 20 years. Registration for the program and zoom sign in information can be found online at newcanaanlibrary.org.\nMs. Fetchet will speak about the evolution of her personal experience\, her advocacy efforts\, and how the loss of her son and the needs of the other families led to the creation of Voices Center for Resilience. In the years since 9/11\, Fetchet has dedicated her time to providing long-term support for victims’ families\, responders\, and survivors\, and in assisting communities impacted by other tragedies.\nThis program is part of New Canaan Library’s September initiative and multimedia exhibition\, “20 Years Later: New Canaan Remembers and Reflects.” The interactive exhibition in the Library’s Curtis Gallery offers the community a space to reflect\, with installations that include an opportunity to view the 9/11 Living Memorial Project created by Voices Center for Resilience\, artwork on loan from the organization\, an educational poster exhibition created specifically for\nlibraries by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum\, and a journal for visitors to write or sketch their thoughts. DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to announce that Brian Lehrer will be guest lecturer for this fall’s annual Salant Lecture. Brian Lehrer is host of National Public Radio’s “The Brian Lehrer Show\,” a daily WNYC call-in program that covers politics and life\, locally and globally. Mr. Lehrer will speak via live videoconference on Thursday\, September 16\, 2021\, at 7 PM EST. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration\nThe Library is pleased to welcome back Lehrer and notes that the virtual format opens the event to a much larger audience than the Library was able to accommodate at his last in person Salant Lecture in early March 2020. The lecture series is named for Richard Salant\, the late President of CBS news\, and honors his dedication to integrity in broadcast journalism\nWith a retrospective view of the past year’s challenges\, Lehrer will cover the pandemic\, politics\, New York\, and related topics. Facilitating the talk will be Nancy Geary\, Executive Director\, New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. “I admire Brian Lehrer and the extraordinary work he does and look forward to an engaging conversation.” said Geary.\nBrian Lehrer is host of “The Brian Lehrer Show”\, WNYC Radio’s daily call-in program\, covering politics and life\, locally and globally. He also hosts “Brian Lehrer: A Daily Politics Podcast”\, \nwhich focuses on national politics. The live show airs weekdays from 10am-noon on WNYC 93.9 FM\, AM 820 and wnyc.org.\nCalled a “master interviewer” by The New York Times\, Lehrer has also been defined as “doggedly on-the-ball “by The New Yorker. Editor David Remnick says Lehrer is “the equivalent of Lebron James or Steph Curry in the interviewing game\,” and New York Magazine put him on its “dream dinner party guest list.”\nThe Brian Lehrer Show was recognized with a 2007 George Foster Peabody Award for “Radio That Builds Community Rather Than Divides.”\nPolitical guests have ranged from Barack Obama and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Mitch McConnell and Boris Johnson\, and beyond. Lehrer has been a questioner in televised New York City Mayoral Debates for every election since 1997. DESCRIPTION:The popularity of sending postcards from far and wide might have waned in recent years\, but the history behind the card itself and the practice is fascinating. Join New Canaan Library for a talk by historian and author Mark D. Van Ells\, PhD on Tuesday\, September 28\, 2021\, at 7 PM EST via live webinar. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org. for zoom information. \nIn his program\, Professor Van Ells will discuss the origins of the humble and ubiquitous postcard in the nineteenth century and explore the great postcard craze of the first decades of the twentieth century\, when these little squares of pasteboard were much more than just travel souvenirs.\nMark D. Van Ells is Professor of History at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York. He received his Ph.D in History from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1999 and is a native of the Badger State. Prior to his position at Queensborough\, he taught for Mt. Senario College and the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. Dr. Van Ells also served as Archivist/Historian at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison from 1994 to 1998. Among his duties at the museum was the conduct of the Wisconsin Veterans Oral History Program\, in which he interviewed nearly 200 veterans who served in conflicts ranging from World War I to Somalia. His research specialties include the cultural history of U.S. military\, immigration and ethnicity\, World War II\, and popular culture.
