SUMMARY:“Edith Farnworth’s Reconsidered” presented via Webinar by Nora Wendl as part of Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:The collaborative series Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library is pleased to present a live webinar by artist\, writer and architect Nora Wendl\, speaking on the Farnsworth House and its owner\, Dr. Edith Farnsworth. The live webinar will be presented on Monday\, June 22 at 7 p.m. EST. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom sign in information is provided upon registration. This webinar is co-presented with the Farnsworth House. \nMarking the 70th anniversary of the groundbreaking for one of the world’s most recognized modern buildings\, the Farnsworth House presents “Edith Farnsworth Reconsidered.” This new installation interprets for the first time the interior as Dr. Edith Farnsworth would have inhabited it in the early 1950s and explores the life and legacy of the fascinating client behind the iconic house designed by renowned architect Mies Van der Rohe.\nIn her talk\, exhibition co-organizer Nora Wendl contextualizes the house within the life and ambitions of Dr. Farnsworth\, furthering a more nuanced understanding of Farnsworth’s desire for the house\, her choice to hire Mies\, her relationship to modernism and design\, and the role that gender has played in framing historical interpretations of this house. \nNora Wendl is an artist\, writer\, and educator who is trained as an architect. Her work encompasses visual art\, creative writing\, and performance as historiographical practices. She is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of New Mexico and is completing a book on Dr. Farnsworth and the Farnsworth House that is organized by and written through a set of interior perspectives.

SUMMARY:New Canaan Library: Lawn Maintenance During Drought\, with the CT Agricultural Experiment Station
DESCRIPTION:Lawns are not only aesthetically pleasing but perform important ecological functions\, such as filtering rainwater\, converting carbon dioxide to oxygen\, and preventing soil erosion. With the right natural conditions Connecticut lawns normally thrive. But\, summertime dry spells place stress on lawns\, and water use restrictions means less watering by the homeowner. Typically\, lawns require 1 – 2 inches of water per week during hot weather\, and that equates to a great deal of water: over 50\,000 gallons per acre! What happens during a drought? With less water\, an otherwise healthy lawn can survive. It naturally turns brown\, goes dormant\, and greens up when wet weather returns. This is the best way keep your lawn and conserve valuable water.\nIn this discussion\, Gary Bugbee\, scientist at Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, will talk about the other natural\, low maintenance ways to keep your lawn healthy during dry times. \nGreg Bugbee is an associate scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. He directs the soil testing laboratory and is responsible for answering public inquiries regarding soil fertility and turf management. With a degree in turf management from the University of Connecticut and over four decades of experience\, Greg has supervised nearly a quarter million soil tests and solved some of the State’s most perplexing soil and turf problems. He has authored numerous professional and trade publications and given hundreds of talks. In addition to this work\, he is principal investigator in the Station’s Invasive Aquatic Plant Program which studies ways to mitigate non-native vegetation that threatens our lakes\, ponds\, and rivers.
