We look forward to your visit. \nGlass House 75th Anniversary Tour season opening April 15- December 15th. \nTour season opens with tours running Thursday – Monday. Choose from a variety of tours. Our most popular tour includes The Glass House\, Painting Gallery\, Sculpture Gallery\, outdoor sculpture\, and Da Monsta\, with a three-quarter mile walk over grass and paths. \nAvailable on Monday\, Thursday\, Friday and Saturday. This tour will include the newly restored interior of the Brick House beginning on May 2\, 2024. Sundays are self-guided tours days. Explore the Glass House campus at your own pace on days dedicated to self-guided visits to the site.  Educators will be available across the site to provide information and answer questions. SUMMARY:Puccini and the Twilight of The Operatic Golden Age
DESCRIPTION:Born in Lucca\, Italy and steeped in operatic tradition\, Giacomo Puccini created operas that showcased a brilliance that made him a worthy successor to Verdi. In his talk\, Professor Gil Harel will analyze the celebrated opera Madama Butterfly (1904)\, one of Puccini’s most famous works. The Italian opera tells the story of B.F. Pinkerton (American) who marries Cio-Cio-san (Japanese). The result is a sublime score filled with worldly influences\, pentatonic music\, and rich melodies that frame a heartbreaking story of love\, betrayal\, and hope smashed asunder.\nGil Harel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is an award-winning musicologist and composer whose interests include styles ranging from western art music to contemporary musical theater. He is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions.

Meeting attendees will receive priority seating for David Sibley’s presentation\, which will follow directly at 3:15 pm. David Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and author\, will provide a captivating talk on the experience of birds\, offering unique insights into avian life. Following the presentation\, at 4:15 pm\, attendees are invited to a book signing and wine and cheese reception\, where they can meet Mr. Sibley and have their books signed. Mr. Sibley will speak at 3:15 pm; the event will close with a reception and a book sale with Elm Street Books from 4:15 – 5 pm.\nBirds possess some amazing superpowers – from ultraviolet vision and highly efficient breathing to deep diving\, precise navigation\, and perfect balance. In fact\, nearly every aspect of their anatomy\, physiology\, and behavior has been shaped in some way by the demands of their ultimate superpower: flight.\nUsing a selection of illustrations and information from his new book What It’s Like to be a Bird\, David will speak about some of the incredible things birds can do\, and the adaptations that have made those possible. David will also discuss the effects of the biodiversity crisis on birds\, and how collisions with buildings and cats impact the bird population.\nDavid Allen Sibley is the author and illustrator of the successful series of nature guides that bear his name\, including The New York Times bestseller The Sibley Guide to Birds. He has contributed art and articles to the Smithsonian\, Science\, The Wilson Journal of Ornithology\, Birding\, BirdWatching\, and North American Birds. He also wrote an illustrated syndicated column for The New York Times. He is the recipient of the Roger Tory Peterson Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Birding Association and the Linnaean Society of New York’s Eisenmann Medal. He lives in Deerfield\, MA.

This extraordinary occasion will feature presentations by the nation’s foremost birding authority\, David Sibley\, and the centennial celebration of the Bristow Bird Sanctuary.\nOn Sunday\, September 8th\, we celebrate the 100th birthday of New Canaan’s Bristow Bird Sanctuary and Wildwood Preserve\, the third oldest bird sanctuary in the USA. This momentous event will occur at the Center Crossing Pavilion in Bristow at 2:00 pm. It will feature keynote speakers First Selectman Dionna Carlson and David Sibley\, who will discuss the importance of saving bird habitats throughout the Northeast. The Harmonia V Woodwind Quintet will perform nature-themed pieces composed by Bristow neighbor Gwyneth Walker. The celebration will also include the unveiling of a new Francis of Assisi statue\, a New Canaan High School Madrigals performance\, a bird release\, unique auction items made from the Mighty Oak Tree in Bristow that came down last year\, and children’s activities. Cake and refreshments will be served. Families are welcome. Registration is free and encouraged.
