SUMMARY:Live Music: Grateful Dead Night
DESCRIPTION:A night of live music cele\n“Take A Step Back” performs the music of The Grateful Dead live at the Carriage Barn Arts Center. Led by Michael-Louis Smith on guitar\, all the members of TASB realize of the important innovations\, and contributions The Grateful Dead and their crew made to the world of music\, touring\, sound engineering\, technology\, and live recording. They’ll perform a repertoire featuring uplifting rhythms\, unique song forms\, organic harmonic progressions and the gorgeous and often cryptic storytelling in the lyrics that connects the listener to the inner fabric of the universe and the spiritual elements of humanity. \nMichael-Louis Smith\, widely known as a jazz instrumentalist and composer\, got his start as a young teenager singing the songs of Robert Hunter and Bob Dylan in places such as Caffe Lena in upstate New York. Inspired by a live performance of the band on his 14th Birthday at Madison Square Garden In 1991\, he credits Garcia and the Dead among his earliest and most potent inspirations to become a musician. \nSponsored by DEANE and New Canaan Music.\nBeverages will be available by donation. Attendees must be 21+.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: A DAY IN THE LIFE
DESCRIPTION:A DAY IN THE LIFE \n\nScenes from Joseph Craig English and Jack Bilander \nEXHIBITION DETAILS:\nLOCATION: Grace Ross Shanley Gallery\nOPENING DATE: Sunday\, March 6\, 2022\nCLOSING DATE: Sunday\, April 17\, 2022 \nThrough the eyes of two different artists\, this exhibition presents snapshots of America\, both urban and pastoral \, along with their inhabitants\, as represented through two very different presentations of printmaking. As an example of how important an individual’s unique perspective is when shaping how and through what process an artist represents their subject matter\, while these two artists both share an interest in the daily lives of people and make use of the medium of printmaking\, their resulting prints yield wildly different results. The vibrant candy colors in Joseph Craig English’s serigraphs command the viewer’s attention and propel the eye around the print\, investigating every nook and cranny\, while Jack Bilander’s more muted sepia tones and rich black etchings set their scenes within a more reserved atmosphere that elicits an emotive response. \nJoseph Craig English is an American artist predominantly known for his silkscreen prints focusing on streetscapes associated with the Greater Washington\, DC area as well as cities such as Richmond\, New York\, North Carolina and California. He graduated from the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University before pursuing a career in advertising where he worked as a designer. By 1974 he resigned from the agency to work as a full time professional artist. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, Chrysler Museum of Art\, Fort Lauderdale Museum\, and the Museum of Western Virginia. It is also included in the public collections of the City of Baltimore\, DC Commission of the Arts\, Georgetown University\, IBM\, Microsoft\, U.S. State Department\, Montgomery County\, MD\, The Washington Post\, Xerox and others. He currently resides and works in the historic community of Washington Grove\, Maryland. \nJack Bilander\, 1919-2008\, was born in Poland and immigrated to the U.S. as a child. He studied art at the National Academy of Design\, the Art Students League\, Columbia University and New York University. His work has been exhibited at the Library of Congress\, Brooklyn Museum of Art\, and the National Academy of Design among others and can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Library of Congress\, the Brooklyn Museum\, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA)\, the Wellington Museum\, New Zealand\, and many others around the world.

SUMMARY:“Levi Strauss: A History of American Style\,”
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to host a talk on the history of Levi Strauss & Co. and the iconic blue jean\, presented by Tracy Panek\, historian and archivist for Levi Strauss & Co. The live webinar takes place on Tuesday\, March 8 at 7 PM EST. \nIn 1873\, in the waning years of the California Gold Rush\, Levi Strauss\, a Jewish dry goods merchant in San Francisco\, along with tailor Jacob Davis\, obtained a U.S. patent for the process of putting metal rivets in men’s denim work pants to increase their durability. Thus was born the blue jean. Tracey Panek\, archivist for Levi Strauss & Co.\, will showcase and examine the life of Levi Strauss\, the invention of the blue jean\, and their iconic place in the history of American style. \nTracy Panek is the Historian for Levi Strauss & Co. as well as the media spokesperson for the company. SUMMARY:“Paradoxes of Nostalgia: Cold War Triumphalism and Global Disorder since 1989\,” Presented by Professor Penny M. Von Eschen
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to welcome Professor Penny Von Eschen\, University of Virginia\, who will speak about the cold war and post-cold war era through the lens of her book\, Paradoxes of Nostalgia: Cold War Triumphalism and Global Disorder since 1989. The live webinar will take place on Thursday\, March 17 at 7 PM EST. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org for Zoom sign in. \nProfessor Penny M. Von Eschen offers a sweeping examination of the cold war’s afterlife and the lingering shadows it casts over geopolitics\, journalism\, and popular culture. In Paradoxes of Power\, Von Eschen shows how myriad forms of nostalgia across the globe—from those that posit a mythic national past to those critical of neoliberalism that remember a time when people believed in the possibility of a collective good—indelibly shape the post-cold war era. When Western triumphalism moved into global South and former eastern bloc spaces\, many articulated a powerful sense of loss and a longing for stability. \nPenny M. Von Eschen is a William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of American Studies and Professor of History at the University of Virginia and author of Satchmo Blows Up the World: Jazz Ambassadors Play the Cold War and Race against Empire: Black Americans and Anticolonialism\, 1937–1957.

SUMMARY:“Hollywood’s Embassies: How Movie Theaters Projected American Power Around the World\,” Presented via New Canaan Library Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In art and entertainment\, sometimes the frame\, or the venue\, is as impactful as what it presents. Such was the case with lavish American movie theaters of the early to mid-20th century\, which seduced audiences around the world with not only Hollywood films\, but with lavish movie theaters owned and operated by the major American film companies. \nNew Canaan Library is pleased to welcome Professor Ross Melnick\, University of California\, Santa Barbara\, as he speaks about the cultural impacts\, both positive and negative\, that American films and the impressive theaters they were shown in had around the globe. The live webinar will take place on Thursday\, March 24 at 7 PM EST; register at newcanaanlibrary.org for Zoom sign in. \nIn a history that stretches from Buenos Aires and Tokyo to Johannesburg and Cairo\, Professor Melnick considers these movie houses as cultural embassies. Aimed at providing a quintessentially “American” experience\, these theaters were outfitted with American technology and accoutrements\, which allowed local audiences to watch American films in an American-owned cinema in a distinctly American way. In his book\, Hollywood Embassies\, (April 2022 publication) Melnick demonstrates that while Hollywood’s marketing of luxury and consumption often struck a chord with local audiences\, it was also frequently tone-deaf to new social\, cultural\, racial\, and political movements. \nRoss Melnick is professor of film and media studies at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. He is the author of American Showman: Samuel “Roxy” Rothafel and the Birth of the Entertainment Industry\, 1908–1935 (Columbia\, 2012) and coeditor of Rediscovering U.S. Newsfilm: Cinema\, Television\, and the Archive (2018).

After a successful event last year\, a sleek Bell407 helicopter\, courtesy of HeliNY\, will once again fly over the skies of New Canaan and hover over Waveny Park\, safely releasing close to 2000 colored golf balls over a designated target. Each golf ball will have an assigned number. The lucky person whose ball lands closest to the target will win a fabulous prize\, such as a Momentum Transend Electric Bike\, a Pet Portrait by Emma Sims\, Mayfair Tickets\, or an 84 Sports NC Gift Basket. The winning balls will be announced immediately. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the NCSF for need-based scholarships given to NCHS graduates. Golf balls will be available for purchase online beginning March 1st at www.nchs-sf.org/colordrop. Those who purchased a ball will be allowed to view the NC Color Drop from a safe distance in Waveny.
