SUMMARY:Patrik Grijalvo and Tom Waldron: Compelling Structure
DESCRIPTION:Heather Gaudio Fine Art is pleased to announce Patrik Grijalvo and Tom Waldron: Compelling Structure. This is the artists’ first exhibition at the gallery which will open on October 2nd and run through November 13th. \nWhile both artists work in different mediums\, they share an affinity in the timeless exploration of the object as aesthetic form and the spatial relationships therein. Patrik Grijalvo is a Spanish photographer who travels the world capturing buildings designed by celebrated architects with his Hasselblad analogue camera. Back in his studio\, Grijalvo prints his digitized photographs on Hahnemühle rag paper with pigmented inks and cuts the images\, singling out and selecting certain architectural elements. Rather than depicting buildings as literal subjects\, the images are recontextualized to become abstractions of shapes and forms\, or into what Grijalvo terms as the “photo object.” Walls\, windows\, passageways\, arcs and the like created by the starchitects are re-collaged into abridged abstracted compositions and arranged in varying degrees of depth\, themselves becoming objects in different planes. The resulting works are adroit visual reinterpretations of architectonic characteristics of shape\, mass\, volume\, depth\, positive and negative spaces. Grijalvo earned his fine arts degree in Spain and has since participated in several artist in residency programs throughout Europe and Asia. While he has exhibited widely in Europe\, this is his first gallery exhibition in the United States. His work is in several private and institutional collections including the Mango and Barset Collections in Barcelona; the Het Wilde Weten in Rotterdam and the Athens School of Fine Arts in Greece. \nTom Waldron’s brief background in architecture and urban planning is evident in his sensitivity to the way form\, mass and volume can reshape the physical space. Made of steel\, wood\, hydro-stone or concrete\, his sculptures are unadorned\, reduced geometric objects. Compelling curvilinear suggestions of biomorphic shapes\, ship boughs\, plinths or modernist totems create a dynamic dialogue with the viewer and the spaces they inhabit. Even the larger\, more volumetric works possess a gentle presence\, their soft edges and minimal delineations are elegant and understated in their simplicity. Waldron’s stint with architecture was brief when he discovered welding and decided to fully dedicate himself to sculpture making. His primary materials are 1/4 or 3/16-inch steel plates which are rolled on a machine used to make water or fuel tanks. He cuts and welds the pieces together\, sanding the seams with an angle grinder to achieve the desired finish. For Waldron\, the arched lines and edges are the defining essence of his work. Any minute shift can alter a sculpture in its entirety\, and he often sketches or creates cardboard maquettes to explore the way the three-dimensional designs behave in space. Waldron has works in the collections of the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo\, NY; the Albuquerque Museum\, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, among others. \nHeather Gaudio Fine Art specializes in emerging and established artists\, offering painting\, works on paper\, photography and sculpture. The gallery provides a full range of art advisory services\, from forming and maintaining a collection\, to securing secondary market material\, to assisting with framing and installation. The focus is on each individual client\, selecting art that best serves his or her vision\, space\, and resources. The six exhibitions offered every year are designed to present important talent and provide artwork appealing to a broad range of interests. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday; 10:30am to 5:30pm; and by appointment.\nFor more information and/or high-res images\, please contact Rachael Palacios\, rachael@heathergaudiofineart.com.

SUMMARY:Seçkin Pirim: Form. Color. Pattern
DESCRIPTION:Heather Gaudio Fine Art PROJECTS is delighted to present “Seçkin Pirim: Form. Color. Pattern\,” the third exhibition at the gallery’s alternative space. The show is presented in collaboration with C24 Gallery in New York City and will run from October 2nd through November 13th. \nLiving and working in Istanbul\, Pirim creates sculptures in a wide range of media\, such as paper\, board\, or industrial materials the likes of liquid iron or plexiglass with automobile paint. He combines computer generated imagery with manual construction\, thereby blending the precision of modern technology with the art of the handcrafted. Pirim’s striking objects explore form\, color\, and pattern\, which at times blur the line between art and design. Examining the relationship between object and space and the tensions between nature and culture\, his works have a foothold in Minimalism\, Constructivism and Futurism. The sculptures stop short of being fully categorized\, however\, for Pirim’s works have a unique aesthetic. They are visual illusions of the familiar or even the unseen: sound waves\, sonic booms\, patterns seen in nature\, all repetitive forms that create a whole structure. Pirim has exhibited widely around the world\, and has been the recipient of numerous awards. His sculptures are in many prominent private collections in Europe and the United States.\nHeather Gaudio Fine Art PROJECTS\, is a new venue designed to display artworks outside the scope of the gallery’s program. Through collaborations with artists\, private dealers\, and galleries in New York City and beyond\, PROJECTS exhibits blue-chip\, contemporary masters and site-specific installations. The aim is to diversify the art landscape and conversation\, presenting collectors and the community with alternative engaging experiences and acquisition opportunities.\nFor more information and/or high-res images\, please contact Rachael Palacios\, rachael@heathergaudiofineart.com.

SUMMARY:Harvard Case Method: “Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights” Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of New Canaan and the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society will sponsor a community discussion employing the Harvard Case Method\, led by New Canaan High School teachers\, Amy Rothschild\, Paul Phillips\, and Kristine Goldhawk. \nThe topic\, “Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights\,” is a timely reminder of how the long and difficult road to voting equality played out during the 1960s\, a time many of us remember. The Harvard Case Method Program brings case method teaching to high schools to deepen students’ understanding of American democracy. \nBased on the highly successful experience of Harvard Business School and others that use case-based teaching\, Harvard’s program is currently being used by New Canaan High School teachers across a range of subjects in history and civics. Cases are painstakingly written by Harvard to show students how to think objectively and critically\, and thereby reverse the decline in civics education and civic engagement in the United States. \nThis event will occur at the museum on Wednesday\, October 6th from 7:00-8:30pm. The doors will open at 6:30. We welcome you to join us for this important discussion.

SUMMARY:Kim Michele Richardson\, Author of Bestselling Novel The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek\, to Speak Via Webinar from New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to present a talk by author Kim Michele Richardson\, who will speak about her latest bestselling historical novel\, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. Ms. Richardson will speak via live videoconference on Thursday\, October 7 at 7 PM EST. Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration at newcanaanlibrary.org. \nA page turner and highly compelling\, “this gem of historical fiction from Richardson” (Publishers Weekly) is a lyrical and accurate depiction of Depression-era Appalachia\, as well as a multi-layered history lesson. Richardson brings to life 19-year-old Cussy Mary Carter\, the indomitable heroine who navigates a community steeped in racial intolerance while carrying out the work she loves – delivering reading material to the rural people of Kentucky. In rich detail and impeccably researched\, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek covers themes ranging from American society in the 1930s and the New-Deal pack Horse Library Project to racial intolerance\, the mining community\, medical research\, and the Blue People of Kentucky – descendants of the Fugate family who carried a recessive gene that turned their skin blue. \nKim Michele Richardson is a multiple-award winning author who has written five works of historical fiction\, and a bestselling memoir. Kim Michele was born and raised in Kentucky and lives there with her family and beloved dogs. She is also the founder of Shy Rabbit\, a writers’ residency and scholarship implemented for low-income writers.

SUMMARY:Town Player’s “Turn of the Screw”
DESCRIPTION:Revered as one of the greatest ghost stories ever told! Henry James’s novella\, “The Turn of the Screw”\, is an eerie Victorian masterpiece. The 2nd show of Town Players’ 75th Season! \nGenuine chills are provided in this tale of a governess\, left in charge of a boy and a girl at a lonely estate. She begins to suspect that the ghosts of two former servants have hideous designs upon the children.
