SUMMARY:On Golden Pond\, written by Ernest Thompson\, who adapted the play for the Oscar-winning film.
DESCRIPTION:On Golden Pond will launch the 75th Anniversary Season of The Town Players of New Canaan at the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park on Friday\, August 13th\, and will run for three weekends. \nA feel-good story about relationships and nostalgia for summers past\, On Golden Pond was adapted by playwright Ernest Thompson for the Oscar-winning film starring Katherine Hepburn and Jane and Henry Fonda. \nThe story centers on the Thayers\, who have spent many summers at their lakeside cabin in Maine. This summer\, tensions between the cranky college professor dad and his California-living daughter take a new turn when a teenager enters the scene. \nDirector John Atkin\, of Norwalk\, says\, “It’s been not only a challenge but a pleasure and honor to work with Ernest Thompson’s script\, in which he created characters and relationships with real flaws\, like real life\, in a sweet and melancholy way.” Atkin\, who most recently directed The Heiress at the Powerhouse\, feels especially fortunate to be bringing back live theater with this cast. \nStamford’s Ted and Gail Yudain\, the real-life couple who recently starred in TPNC’s first live-streamed production\, The Outgoing Tide\, will play Norman and Ethel Thayer. Roger Dykeman\, of Stamford\, a TPNC ensemble regular including Dearly Departed\, plays beau Billy Ray. Gillian Holt\, of Monroe\, who played many characters in TPNC’s Baskerville\, now portrays daughter Chelsea. Tim Brandt\, of Stamford\, last seen in TPNC’s Romantic Comedy\, plays the friendly mailman\, and Zachary Helgesen\, of Wilton\, recently in Red vs. the Wolf\, produced by the Middlebrook School Theater\, delivers jabs as the snarky teenager. \nTheater-goers might enjoy Waveny Park’s own “golden pond” just behind the theater for a pre-show picnic. Anderson Pond\, restored through the Waveny Park Conservancy\, with the support of the Anderson family and the Town of New Canaan\, is a new “focal point of the park\,” according to Recreation Director\, Stephen Benko. \nThe Town Players of New Canaan was the first local theater group to stream live performances during the pandemic. According to TPNC President Deborah Burke\, the all-volunteer theater has chosen upbeat and exciting plays for its reopening. The shows include two comedies\, Noel Coward’s Hay Fever and Moonlight and Magnolias\, about the making of Gone with the Wind\, a thriller\, The Turn of the Screw\, based on Henry James’ novella\, and the inspirational true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt\, Silent Sky. New this year\, the theater will offer an online seating chart and will add a children’s show with Open Arts Alliance. All CDC guidelines will be carefully followed. \nFriday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m.\, August 13th\, 20th\, 21st\, 27th and 28th. Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. on August 15th\, 22nd\, and 29th. A SPECIAL EVENT performance Saturday\, August 14th\, at 4 p.m.\, will include free admission to the Waveny Park fireworks scheduled for that evening if guests stay inside the park after the show. \nTickets for all shows are thirty dollars for adults and twenty-five dollars for seniors/students (with no additional ticketing fees). \nVisit TPNC.ORG to purchase tickets and check out the upcoming season. SUMMARY:“A Sense of Place”
DESCRIPTION:HEATHER GAUDIO FINE ART is pleased to present “A Sense of Place\,” featuring new works by Tegan Brozyna Roberts\, Simona Prives and Viviane Rombaldi Seppey. The show will open August 14th and run through September 25th. \nMemory\, geography and cultural experiences are underlying themes explored by these three women artists. Through an innovative use of paper\, maps\, threads\, printmaking\, collage and projected imagery\, the artists in the show create two and three-dimensional objects that express universal notions of belonging and association. \nBrooklyn-based Tegan Brozyna Roberts combines her background in painting and sculpture with a long family tradition of working with textiles. Roberts’ works are visual manifestations of her personal experiences in urban locations – patterns\, colors and hues she encounters and documents in her day-to-day activities. She scours the environment to mine unique and often overlooked colors and markings\, recording the forms by rubbing certain shapes\, such as cracks on the sidewalk\, peeling paint on a fences or barks on a sycamore tree. Once in her studio\, Brozyna Roberts cuts and hand-colors paper in the forms and palettes to echo what she has experienced\, carefully collaging or weaving them through a constructed loom. Her works become abstractions referencing specific times and spaces. The show will feature a new body of work\, the Doldrum Series\, created in the last year during the wake of the pandemic. The term describes a calm area in the ocean that is often followed by erratic and violent storms. For the artist\, the doldrums marked a time of feeling stranded in the anticipation of an approaching storm\, but she was also comforted by the knowledge that the situation was temporary. The swirling movements in the Doldrum Series reflect a yearning for peace and quietude amidst uncertainty and a relentless perseverance to cultivate order in a chaotic time. Brozyna Roberts holds an M.F.A.\, and her work has been included in several solo and group exhibitions. She has also created large\, site-specific installations\, most recently for Facebook’s campus in New York City. \nUrban structures and natural environments come together in the work of Simona Prives\, a multi-media artist also based in Brooklyn. Prives creates digital and physical collages as well as projections that reference current and historic locations. She reconfigures maps\, topographical patterns\, construction plans and other imagery to create new visual terrains that are partly recognizable and partially obscured in their nebulous atmospheric compositions. The effects are dream-like landscapes with a cinematic aspect\, teasing the viewer with suggested narratives that are mysterious and elusive. The artist’s process involves silkscreen\, monotype and collaging found materials\, and although some of her works are editioned\, they are individually hand-colored\, making each unique. For the show\, Prives will present imagery sourced pre-pandemic when she was able to move around more freely. The ensuing period of social isolation allowed her to complete new unique collaged works and video installations\, which will also be featured in the show. Prives has exhibited extensively will debut an important multi-part public video installation in New York City this August. She too holds an M.F.A\, is a part-time faculty member at CUNY\, NYU and Parsons School of Design and has participated in several artist residency programs. \nViviane Rombaldi Seppey hails from Sion\, Switzerland\, a small town close to the French and Italian borders\, and has lived in Asia\, Europe and the United States. Recontextualizing maps\, phone books and other printed materials to reference the places she has inhabited\, Rombaldi Seppey finds new ways to reflect her cultural mobility. Originally intended to document and mark locations\, claim spaces\, record names and addresses\, the maps and phone book pages now take on new formats and meanings. Rombaldi Seppey cuts\, weaves and re-assembles the printed materials as a way to investigate and explore her own notions of identity and personal diaspora. Delicately spliced and crafted works such as “Home”\, a tapestry woven through 43\,400 pinpoint holes with atlas and map pages\, reference tangible and emotional states of being. Other works in the exhibition made out of New York City phone books take on the appearance of the city’s vertically oriented architecture. Rombaldi Seppey has an M.S. and an M.F.A.\, and her work has been exhibited widely in notable institutions including the Bronx Museum of Arts\, New York and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia. The artist currently lives and works in New York. \nHeather Gaudio Fine Art specializes in emerging and established artists\, offering paintings\, works on paper\, photography and sculpture. The gallery provides a full range of art advisory services\, from forming and maintaining a collection\, to securing secondary market material\, to assisting with framing and installation. The focus is on each individual client\, selecting art that best serves their vision\, space and resources. The six carefully curated exhibitions held every year are designed to present important talent appealing to a broad range of interests and sensibilities. The gallery also dedicates its exhibition space to site-specific installations as a way to expand and re-contextualize the artists’ processes. Participation in several national and international art fairs has also enabled the gallery to showcase its roster artists to wider audiences. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday; 10:30am to 5:30pm and by appointment.

SUMMARY:HARD-COVER BOOKS AT HOME
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-day virtual workshop hosted on ZOOM\, participants will get a crash course in making hard-cover books at home with little-to-no equipment. Beth will begin by creating the “textblock” for the book\, illustrating how to fold and sew the pages\, add end papers\, and prep the book for covering. Participants will then learn to make their own book cloth from fabrics they have at home.
SUMMARY:HARD-COVER BOOKS AT HOME
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-day virtual workshop hosted on ZOOM\, participants will get a crash course in making hard-cover books at home with little-to-no equipment. Participants will then learn to make their own book cloth from fabrics they have at home. Finally\, participants will use the book cloth they each created to make covers for their book and learn the process of casing-in hard-cover books.
