SUMMARY:“Martin Kline: Allover” exhibition
DESCRIPTION:HEATHER GAUDIO FINE ART is pleased to present “Martin Kline: Allover\,” his third solo exhibition at the gallery. The show will open on January 23rd and run through March 6th\, 2021. \nThroughout the course of his career\, Kline has examined systems of historicism and presentation\, his focused and disciplined approach creating bodies of works in series\, each with their distinctive visual language. Among his many investigations\, Kline has looked to notions of authenticity\, sincerity and originality\, and\, as he states\, there comes a point when an artist “cannot escape Jackson Pollock.” For this exhibition\, Kline presents his newest group of paintings entitled Allover\, inspired by the drip technique he utilized in Dream of Pollock (for Kirk Varnedoe) back in 2007. \nThe multi-colored Allover series consists of\, for the most part\, strictly monochromatic abstractions. Created in a looser\, automatist fashion\, these paintings have a more fluid sensibility\, with random thread-like rivulets of pigment networked in and out of broader\, purposeful bands of color. Unlike previous series\, these paintings lack compositional focal points\, nor do they possess narrative characteristics seen in his Hammocks assemblages. The viewer’s eye is free to wander all over and engage with the painted surface indiscriminately. \nWhile Kline may be revisiting the spontaneous technique for which Pollock became famous\, the approach to painting with the panel positioned horizontally has been very much decidedly his own from early on. Kline has mostly worked on his surfaces laid horizontally\, typically on a tabletop—his signature additive approach to painting requiring the pull of gravity to fasten the pigments in situ while drying. For the most part\, Kline’s hand has had a direct touch through the use of a paintbrush on the paper\, panel or canvas. In the Allover paintings\, Kline is still working horizontally but he has severed the traditional anatomical connection\, distancing himself from the surface even more by placing the panels on the floor. This increased space relinquishes control for the drips and pours to act more randomly and allow for elements of surprise to occur. Most of the panels in this series lack confining frames and the sides are free of splashed pigments that reveal the process. The resulting suggestion is that the drips and thicker gestures of color travel beyond the picture plane. It is as if the viewer is getting a snapshot\, a window into elements that exist outside the painting’s boundaries. \nKline has enjoyed a prolific artistic career\, creating a continuum of output that draws from a wealth of sources including his own works. His paintings\, drawings and sculptures are represented in many notable private and public collections worldwide\, including the Albertina\, Vienna\, Austria; The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York; the Whitney Museum of Art\, New York and the Yale University Art Galleries\, New Haven\, CT. \nHeather Gaudio Fine Art specializes in emerging and established artists\, offering painting\, works on paper\, photography and sculpture. The gallery provides a full range of art advisory services\, from forming and maintaining a collection\, to securing secondary market material\, to assisting with framing and installation. The focus is on each individual client\, selecting art that best serves his or her vision\, space\, and resources. The six exhibitions offered every year are designed to present important talent and provide artwork appealing to a broad range of interests. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday; 10:30am to 5:30pm; and by appointment.

SUMMARY:“Telling Stories through Architecture: Landscape and Meaning in the Buildings of Brooklyn” as Part of New Canaan Library’s “One Author New Canaan” Community Read
DESCRIPTION:During the month of March\, New Canaan Library celebrates “One Author New Canaan” and the literary works of award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson with programming that supports\, and honors\, themes found throughout her work. A great deal of Jacqueline Woodson’s novels take place against the backdrop of Brooklyn. Join professor Malka Simon\, Ph.D. for an exploration of the architecture of Brooklyn on Wednesday\, March 3\, at 7 PM EST. Please register at newcananlibrary.org; Zoom link will be provided upon registration.\nThe borough of Brooklyn is often the setting of Jacqueline Woodson’s stories\, but what does that setting look like? Professor Malka Simon\, PhD\, will offer a fascinating examination of the diverse architecture of Brooklyn\, examining a variety of neighborhoods and buildings across the borough and considering the history of and meaning behind Brooklyn’s evolving landscapes. Some of the topics she will raise and discuss include what the built environment can tell us about the people who settled and lived their lives in Brooklyn\, and how the structures of the borough reflect social meaning\, and the changing nature of Brooklyn over time.\nMalka Simon is an architectural historian specializing in modern architecture and urban development in the United States and Europe. She teaches courses at Brooklyn College on the history of architecture and urban design\, and on New York City’s architectural development. Her research examines Brooklyn’s industrial landscapes of the early twentieth century and considers the intersections between architectural landscape and social history. She is currently working on a project that frames Brooklyn’s industrial architecture within the broader context of New York City’s outer borough landscapes. Ms. Simon holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University.

SUMMARY:Jeff Immelt in conversation with Peter Maglathlin: Hot Seat: What I Learned Leading a Great American Company
DESCRIPTION:Barrett Bookstore\, in partnership with the Darien Community Assoication\, will welcome Former CEO of GE to discuss his new book\, Hot Seat: What I Learned Leading a Great American Company. Immelt will be in conversation with Darien resident and Chairman and CEO of MBI Inc. Peter Maglathlin. A copy of Immelt’s book is included in the price of the ticket. \nREGISTER HERE \nABOUT THE BOOK \nA memoir of successful leadership in times of crisis: the former CEO of General Electric\, named one of the “World’s Best CEOs” three times by Barron’s\, shares the hard-won lessons he learned from his experience leading GE immediately after 9/11\, through the economic devastation of the 2008–09 financial crisis\, and into an increasingly globalized world. \nIn September 2001\, Jeff Immelt replaced the most famous CEO in history\, Jack Welch\, at the helm of General Electric. Less than a week into his tenure\, the 9/11 terrorist attacks shook the nation\, and the company\, to its core. GE was connected to nearly every part of the tragedy—GE-financed planes powered by GE-manufactured engines had just destroyed real estate that was insured by GE-issued policies. Facing an unprecedented situation\, Immelt knew his response would set the tone for businesses everywhere that looked to GE—one of America’s biggest and most-heralded corporations—for direction. No pressure. \nOver the next sixteen years\, Immelt would lead GE through many more dire moments\, from the 2008–09 Global Financial Crisis to the 2011 meltdown of Fukushima’s nuclear reactors\, which were designed by GE. But Immelt’s biggest challenge was inherited: Welch had handed over a company that had great people\, but was short on innovation. Immelt set out to change GE’s focus by making it more global\, more rooted in technology\, and more diverse. But the stock market rarely rewarded his efforts\, and GE struggled. \nIn Hot Seat\, Immelt offers a rigorous\, candid interrogation of himself and his tenure\, detailing for the first time his proudest moments and his biggest mistakes. The most crucial component of leadership\, he writes\, is the willingness to make decisions. But knowing what to do is a thousand times easier than knowing when to do it. Perseverance\, combined with clear communication\, can ensure progress\, if not perfection\, he says. That won’t protect any CEO from second-guessing\, but Immelt explains how he’s pushed through even the most withering criticism: by staying focused on his team and the goals they tried to achieve. As the business world continues to be rocked by stunning economic upheaval\, Hot Seat is an urgently needed\, and unusually raw\, source of authoritative guidance for decisive leadership in uncertain times. \nABOUT JEFF IMMELT \nJeff Immelt was the ninth Chairman of GE and served as CEO for sixteen years. He has been named one of the “World’s Best CEOs” three times by Barron’s. During his tenure as CEO\, GE was named “America’s Most Admired Company” by Fortune magazine and one of “The World’s Most Respected Companies” in polls by Barron’s and the Financial Times. Immelt has received fifteen honorary degrees and numerous awards for business leadership and chaired the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness under the Obama administration. He is a member of The American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, and a lecturer at Stanford University. Immelt earned a BA in applied mathematics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard University. He and his wife have one daughter.

SUMMARY:“Sagerman and Clement: High-Performance Color”
DESCRIPTION:HEATHER GAUDIO FINE ART is pleased to present “Sagerman and Clement: High-Performance Color\,” featuring new paintings by Robert Sagerman and sculpture by John Clement. The show opens March 13th and will run through May 1st\, 2021.\nWhether using a palette knife or welding and cutting steel\, Sagerman and Clement share a physicality in their processes\, creating remarkable artworks that activate their environments with vivid colors. \nAbout the artists: \nRobert Sagerman is known for making arresting and intensely colored textural paintings. Mixing his own pigments\, he carefully selects the palettes and works on several canvases at a time. Sagerman’s process is deliberate and methodical\, painstakingly applying thick strokes of oil or silicone onto the surface in pointillist fashion\, a single color at a time. Keeping track of every paint application and every color utilized\, Sagerman documents each number as he builds up the abstract composition. Depending on the scale\, his paintings can have anywhere from 50- 250 different colors. The canvases are typically 3-inches thick\, becoming quasi sculptural in their own right and require a wood panel backing to support the weight of the material. The titles of the paintings correspond to the total number of pigment applications\, which reach the thousands. Sagerman holds a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Judaic Studies and is inspired by medieval Jewish mysticism. Counting embodies a Kabbalist tradition\, providing the artist with a form of meditation and a means to arrive to a state of clarity and transcendence. Working intuitively\, Sagerman at times is surprised to discover unexpected color interactions and the direction his meditative process takes him. \nFor this exhibition\, Sagerman has created richly colored and textured panels\, as well as smaller works on paper. Painted this past year\, these artworks express an exuberant palette and are more fluid and open than his previous series\, which tended to be rigorous and monochromatic. Some paintings have markings applied horizontally while others possess swirling patterns undulating across the picture plane. They are delineated by grooves that appear to have been incised or carved into the surface\, almost taking on the properties of topographic landscapes. The pigments are so intricately packed they draw the viewer in\, and closer inspection reveals the contrasting colors are what render dimensionality to the works. Only with varying distance and vantage points can the viewer fully appreciate the skill and materiality that goes into these paintings. Sagerman has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad and his works are in many private and museum collections. \nA lot of sculptors today have taken to newer technologies that facilitate creating works with relative ease. Not so for John Clement\, who stands out among peers for continuing to embrace the dying artform of cutting and welding steel himself. As a young college graduate\, Clement was fortunate to have apprenticed under the celebrated artists Mark di Suvero and John Henry. These experiences not only taught him the physical properties of the material\, but also the dynamics of working with monumental-scale sculpture. When Clement broke out on his own\, he translated his acquired knowledge to create sculpture in curvilinear forms. Made of steel pipes\, the coils and arcs became his signature style\, almost like drawings or doodles in space. Depending on the thickness of the pipes\, the forms can suggest lithe scribbles or have a more audacious and gargantuan presence. \nClement’s three-dimensional works are striking with their bright colors derived from high-performance vehicle paint. Affixed to a base or the ground\, the metallic circular gestures give the impression they can spin and be turned around\, as if the interplay between positive and negative space is in motion. They energize the indoor or outdoor spaces they inhabit no matter their size. Clement is equally versed in offering the viewer more intimate discourses with smaller scaled objects\, as he is working with the oversized\, public artworks. Taken to a grander scale\, the sculptures punctuate rigid and structured urban environments or brighten green or snow-covered pastoral fields. The show will feature new stainless steel free-standing sculpture intended for both indoor and outdoor spaces\, as well as smaller forms that can be turned on their base. Also new to his practice are wall-mounted pieces\, works that take the notion of drawings in space back into a two-dimensional plane. Clement has exhibited his sculptures extensively throughout the country and has worked on many site-specific public art commissions and corporate installations.
