SUMMARY:Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum to Celebrate Election Year with virtual First Ladies Tea
DESCRIPTION:The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum\, located at 295 West Avenue\, Norwalk\, CT will host a virtual First Ladies Tea on Sunday\, Nov. 8\, 2-4 p.m. The event\, chaired by LMMM Trustee Hunter Arton\, will feature a talk titled\, The Media’s Fascination with First Ladies by Dr. Lisa M. Burns. The program will include a hat contest with prizes and a silent auction. Submissions for the hat contest are due no later than Nov. 1st. Please visit the Museum’s website for more details on how to enter the contest. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members and available online at www.lockwoodmathewsmansion.com. All proceeds will benefit the Museum’s cultural and educational programs. \nMs. Arton said\, “The committee and I are excited to welcome our communities virtually for an afternoon tea while we learn little known facts about our leading ladies. It is sure to be an entertaining and educational event!” \nThe press and public have been fascinated with first ladies since Martha Washington’s time. The first lady position is unique in that it is unelected\, not defined in the Constitution\, yet demands a great deal of its holders. They are among the most highly recognizable figures of any presidential administration\, often treated as celebrities with the news media following their every move. They are public figures whether they like it or not. They are also political figures\, due to their proximity to power via their husbands and the various duties they carry out for their husbands’ administrations. This presentation will focus on press coverage of first ladies throughout the years\, including the various ways they’ve dealt with the constant media scrutiny and life in the public spotlight. \nDr. Lisa M. Burns is a Professor of Media Studies at Quinnipiac University. She holds a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Maryland at College Park. Her edited collection\, Media Relations and the Modern First Lady: From Jacqueline Kennedy to Melania Trump was released in February 2020. She is also the author of First Ladies and the Fourth Estate: Press Framing of Presidential Wives and has published many journal articles and book chapters on first ladies. Dr. Burns’ research interests include political communication\, particularly media coverage of U.S. presidents and political spouses; public memory; and media criticism. She frequently serves as a media expert on topics including first ladies\, women in politics\, and presidential campaign coverage. \nThe Museum’s virtual First Ladies Tea is generously sponsored in part by Connecticut Cottages and Gardens and BMW of Darien. The Museum’s 2020 cultural and educational programs are made possible in part by generous funding from LMMM’s Founding Patrons: The Estate of Mrs. Cynthia Clark Brown; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: The Sealark Foundation; LMMM’s 2020 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk and The Maurice Goodman Foundation; LMMM’s 2020 Distinguished Benefactors for Education: The Daphne Seybolt Culpeper Memorial Foundation\, Inc. SUMMARY:“Trials of the Salem Witches” to be Presented by Rachel Christ\, Via Live Webinar from New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:As a tie-in to this year’s Lit Lunch @ Night\, featuring Alice Hoffman speaking on her novel Magic Lessons: A Prequel to Practical Magic\, New Canaan Library welcomes Rachel Christ\, Salem Witch Museum Director of Education\, who will deliver a live webinar on the topic of the Salem witch trials. Join the webinar on Tuesday\, November 10 at 7 PM EST. Zoom sign-in information will be provided upon registration; please register at newcanaanibrary.org. \nThe Salem witch trials of the late 1600s marked an infamous period in American history. Centering on the year 1692\, Ms. Christ will explore the historic events that were set off by a mysterious and alarming illness that afflicted the niece and daughter of Reverend Samuel Parris. Soon after\, the inhabitants of Salem Village were terrified with the prospect of witches loose in Essex County. Over the span of just one year\, the colonists experienced the most severe and devastating witch-hunt to ever take place in North America.\nRACHEL CHRIST is the Director of Education at the Salem Witch Museum. She holds a BA in Global History from Clark University and is currently working on her MA in History and Museum Studies at Tufts University. She has been Director of Education at the Salem Witch Museum since 2017\, and within this role she works with students and teachers\, curates the museum’s exhibits\, directs staff training\, and coordinates the museum’s educational programming.

SUMMARY:Christmas Playtime at the Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum kicks off the Holiday Season with a new exhibit titled\, Christmas Playtime at the Mansion\, which will open to the public on Wed.\, Nov. 11\, 2020 and run through Sun.\, Jan. 3\, 2021\, at 295 West Avenue\, Norwalk\, CT. \nFrom 1868 to 1938\, children played on the third floor of the Mansion\, which was filled with toys and dolls and even featured a theater where they may have performed. This year\, after undergoing expert restoration\, the Museum’s doll collection along with several vintage toys will be exhibited as part of Christmas Playtime at the Mansion\, an exhibition that will recreate those playful times during the Victorian era. \nThe first floor of the Mansion will feature Christmas trees decorated with period-appropriate ornaments\, a dining table adorned with dazzling antique silver and china\, several playful dolls and toy vignettes\, and sumptuous Victorian gowns curated by Stacey Danielson\, with generous loans from the Wilton Historical Society. \nThe exhibit will also feature magnificent contemporary displays and trees decorated by renowned interior designer Victoria Vandamm of Vandamm Interiors\, while silk garlands embellished with ribbons and trimmings will drape the grand Victorian staircase beautifully decorated by Danna DiElsi\, owner of The Silk Touch in Norwalk\, CT. \nThe exhibition is made possible with the assistance of the Curatorial Committee co-chaired by Trustees Mimi Findlay and Paul Veeder. \nThe Museum’s 2020 cultural and educational programs are made possible in part by generous funding from LMMM’s Founding Patrons: The Estate of Mrs. Cynthia Clark Brown; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: The Sealark Foundation; LMMM’s 2020 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk and The Maurice Goodman Foundation; LMMM’s 2020 Distinguished Benefactors for Education: The Daphne Seybolt Culpeper Memorial Foundation\, Inc.
