SUMMARY:New Canaan Library Presents Webinar with Bonnie Tsui\, author of Why We Swim\, Joined by Matthew Busse of New Canaan YMCA
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to present a live webinar on Thursday\, October 1 at 7 pm with Bonnie Tsui\, author of Why We Swim\, an immersive and eye-opening perspective on swimming and on human behavior itself. Ms.Tsui will be joined in conversation by New Canaan YMCA Director of Pool Operations\, Matthew Busse. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration. \nWhy We Swim is propelled by stories of Olympic champions\, a Baghdad swim club that meets in Saddam Hussein’s palace pool\, modern day Japanese samurai swimmers\, even an Icelandic fisherman who improbably survives a wintry six hour swim after a shipwreck. New York Times contributor Bonnie Tsui\, a swimmer herself\, dives into the deep from the San Francisco Bay to the South China Sea\, investigating what seduces us to water\, despite its dangers\, and why we come back to it again and again. She offers an immersive\, unforgettable\, and eye-opening perspective on swimming—and of human behavior itself.\nBonnie Tsui has written for The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, Outside\, and other publications. Why We Swim was named an Editor’s Choice/Staff Pick by The New York Times Book Review and a Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times bestseller. Her previous book\, American Chinatown\, was the winner of the Asia/Pacific American Award for Literature and a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller. She lives\, swims\, and surfs in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nMatt Busse is the director of pool operations at the New Canaan YMCA. He grew up in New Fairfield\, Connecticut\, a lake town known for having a deeply rooted culture in aquatic recreation. Matt began his time at the New Canaan YMCA in 2019 as the assistant aquatic director. Matt is currently pursuing his master’s degree in recreation administration\, focusing on non-profit management. He has been a member of the Impact Panel for the Water Safety Task Force for the Commission on Women\, Children\, and Seniors\, where he stressed the importance of safety around water and parent’s engaging with their children while in water.

SUMMARY:Exploration of French New Wave Cinema\, by Professor Nicholas Paige via New Canaan Library Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:French New Wave cinema\, arguably the single most important movement in post-war film\, will be discussed by Professor Nicholas Paige via a live webinar from New Canaan Library on Thursday\, October 8 at 7 PM EST. Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration; please register at newcanaanibrary.org.\nFans of film and Francophiles alike will enjoy this unique lecture by Professor Nicholas Paige\, PhD. Professor Paige will provide a brief introduction to French New Wave cinema\, then rather than review New Wave filmography\, he will point to select examples to explore the theoretical\, technological\, and cultural currents that converged to produce this remarkable source of talent which began around 1959.\nProfessor Nicholas Paige\, who holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania\, has been teaching in the Department of French at the University of California Berkeley for about 25 years. While he regularly teaches a class on the New Wave\, his main research areas lie in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His latest book\, a quantitative study of the evolving “novel system” in France and England\, is due out at the beginning of 2021. He is currently working on a book about art\, literature\, and worthlessness over the last five hundred years.

SUMMARY:Keith Simpson To Discuss Landscape Design for Prefab Home
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan resident and American Society of Landscape Design Fellow Keith Simpson will present “Landscape Design for the Installation of a Blu home” on October 15 @ 7 pm via zoom. The program is part of October4design\, a month-long celebration of New Canaan’s architecture\, art\, design and community. The presentation is free. \nIn August 2014\, the owners of a four-acre parcel in northern New Canaan decided to build a modular home in the postmodern style. They hired Blu Homes\, a premium prefabrication company based in California. The sleek designs with open floor plans are energy efficient and made with sustainable materials. \nKeith will share his experience of clearing the steep\, heavily wooded land\, which had never been built on before\, preparing the building foundation\, accepting delivery of the Blu model\, and then finishing the landscaping once the house was sited. The challenging project took many months and required creativity and ingenuity. Keith’s zoom presentation includes photographs documenting every step. \nFor more information visit www.october4design.org or call 203-966-1776 ext. 2.
