The Bank requests that each individual limit their items to three square boxes. \nStaff with proper protective equipment (PPE) will be on hand to help unload boxes from your car and carry them to the shredder. SUMMARY:Young Architects Join the Builder’s Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Local kids are invited to participate in a Builder’s Challenge to help celebrate October4design – the month-long celebration of New Canaan’s architecture\, art\, community and design – spearheaded by the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. Families can create a structure in their favorite New Canaan architectural style. Their flights of imagination will be displayed in the windows of local stores throughout the month of October. \n“In celebrating October4design\, we are excited to see how New Canaan’s architectural treasures are interpreted by the youngest builders\,” said Nancy Geary\, Executive Director of the NCM&HS. “Inspiration can come from the flat roof of the mid-century moderns or the Victorian detailing of the Rogers Studio or Vine Cottage\, or a neighbor’s home.” \nStructures should be built of interlocking blocks\, such as Lego or Mega Bloks bricks. There are 54 baseplates to get you started on a first-come\, first-served basis – one per family please! (Don’t worry\, you can retrieve your child’s creation at the end of the exhibit!) If your child does not have access to such building materials\, please contact the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society and a kit can be provided. \nThe first annual Builder’s Challenge is possible thanks to the generous support of the Rotary Club of New Canaan. \nThe Builder’s Challenge sign up (and free baseplates) will be available at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society beginning September 9th located at 13 Oenoke Ridge Road weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. \nThe houses will be on display in store windows throughout town during the month of October. \nFor additional information\, contact the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society at 203-996-1776 ext. 2.

DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library\, New Canaan Museum & Historical Society\, New Canaan Community Foundation\, and the Interfaith Council introduce an important series to address our community’s understanding of race and racism. “The Start of Change: Addressing Racism\,” is a six-part series\, designed to bring our community together in developing a common understanding of the history\, policy and experiences shaping present day discussions of race. New Canaan residents\, organizations and leaders are being encouraged to participate in this important initiative. “The Start of Change” series is also supported by the generosity of community partner Grace Farms Foundation. \nRespected academics\, authors and policy experts will address multiple topics related to race relations in America. The series will be followed by facilitated discussions to explore creative and meaningful action steps relevant for our community.\n“The History of Slavery and Race in Colonial New England\,” begins the series\, presented on Tuesday\, September 15 at 7 PM by Justene Hill Edwards\, PhD\, assistant professor in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia. Please visit newcanaanlibrary.org for a full schedule; please register individually for each session in the series.\nThe traditional narrative of colonial New England is one of Puritan colonists fleeing religious persecution in England in search of new lands where they could exercise their religious traditions free from tyranny. Ironically\, that freedom did not always extend to others. Puritan religious beliefs\, and their plans for survival\, were not at odds with slavery. In fact\, enslaved African and indigenous labor was a visible aspect of life in colonial New England. Though the number of enslaved people in New England was not on par with the number of enslaved Africans in the Southern colonies\, the existence of slavery in colonial New England cannot be ignored. Professor Edwards will explore this complex history of slavery and discuss how the experiences of enslaved people in New England shaped their fight for freedom into the 19th century.\nJustene Hill Edwards is an assistant professor in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia. A scholar of African-American history\, Hill Edwards specializes in the history of slavery and the history of capitalism in the United States. She received her doctorate in history from Princeton University\, holds an MA in African New World studies from Florida International University\, and a BA in Spanish from Swarthmore College. Hill Edwards’ first book is Unfree Markets: The Slaves’ Economy and the Rise of Capitalism in South Carolina (forthcoming\, March 2021 on Columbia University Press\, in the Columbia Series in the History of U.S. Capitalism).

Do we have free will\, or are we just controlled by the microbes that live inside of us? In this talk\, Yale Science Communication will discuss some of the ways these microbes impact our daily lives and may lead to new breakthroughs\, from the food we eat to potential brain-altering effects. \nYale Science Communication – a Graduate Student Organization is a group of graduate students and postdocs passionate about science communication\, education\, and advocacy. YSC (formerly Yale Science Diplomats) began in 2007\, when a group of graduate students founded a “Scientists and Engineers of America” (SEA) chapter at Yale\, which has since become the Yale Science Communication.
