SUMMARY:“Edith Farnworth’s Reconsidered” presented via Webinar by Nora Wendl as part of Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:The collaborative series Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library is pleased to present a live webinar by artist\, writer and architect Nora Wendl\, speaking on the Farnsworth House and its owner\, Dr. Edith Farnsworth. The live webinar will be presented on Monday\, June 22 at 7 p.m. EST. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom sign in information is provided upon registration. This webinar is co-presented with the Farnsworth House. \nMarking the 70th anniversary of the groundbreaking for one of the world’s most recognized modern buildings\, the Farnsworth House presents “Edith Farnsworth Reconsidered.” This new installation interprets for the first time the interior as Dr. Edith Farnsworth would have inhabited it in the early 1950s and explores the life and legacy of the fascinating client behind the iconic house designed by renowned architect Mies Van der Rohe.\nIn her talk\, exhibition co-organizer Nora Wendl contextualizes the house within the life and ambitions of Dr. Farnsworth\, furthering a more nuanced understanding of Farnsworth’s desire for the house\, her choice to hire Mies\, her relationship to modernism and design\, and the role that gender has played in framing historical interpretations of this house. \nNora Wendl is an artist\, writer\, and educator who is trained as an architect. Her work encompasses visual art\, creative writing\, and performance as historiographical practices. She is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of New Mexico and is completing a book on Dr. Farnsworth and the Farnsworth House that is organized by and written through a set of interior perspectives.

SUMMARY:New Canaan Library: Lawn Maintenance During Drought\, with the CT Agricultural Experiment Station
DESCRIPTION:Lawns are not only aesthetically pleasing but perform important ecological functions\, such as filtering rainwater\, converting carbon dioxide to oxygen\, and preventing soil erosion. With the right natural conditions Connecticut lawns normally thrive. But\, summertime dry spells place stress on lawns\, and water use restrictions means less watering by the homeowner. Typically\, lawns require 1 – 2 inches of water per week during hot weather\, and that equates to a great deal of water: over 50\,000 gallons per acre! What happens during a drought? With less water\, an otherwise healthy lawn can survive. It naturally turns brown\, goes dormant\, and greens up when wet weather returns. This is the best way keep your lawn and conserve valuable water.\nIn this discussion\, Gary Bugbee\, scientist at Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, will talk about the other natural\, low maintenance ways to keep your lawn healthy during dry times. \nGreg Bugbee is an associate scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. He directs the soil testing laboratory and is responsible for answering public inquiries regarding soil fertility and turf management. With a degree in turf management from the University of Connecticut and over four decades of experience\, Greg has supervised nearly a quarter million soil tests and solved some of the State’s most perplexing soil and turf problems. He has authored numerous professional and trade publications and given hundreds of talks. In addition to this work\, he is principal investigator in the Station’s Invasive Aquatic Plant Program which studies ways to mitigate non-native vegetation that threatens our lakes\, ponds\, and rivers.

SUMMARY:A Virtual Talk on American Impressionist Mary Rogers Williams by Author & Scholar Eve Kahn
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary artist Mary Rogers Williams (1857—1907)\, a baker’s daughter from Hartford\, Connecticut\, biked and hiked from the Arctic Circle to Naples\, exhibited from Paris to Indianapolis\, trained at the Art Students League\, chafed against art world rules that favored men\, wrote thousands of pages about her travels and work\, taught at Smith College for nearly two decades\, but sadly ended up almost totally obscure. \nThe book\, Forever Seeing New Beauties\, reproduces her unpublished artworks that capture pensive gowned women\, Norwegian slopes reflected in icy waters\, saw-tooth rooflines on French chateaux\, and incense hazes in Italian chapels\, and it offers a vivid portrayal of an adventurer\, defying her era’s expectations. \nAuthor Eve M. Kahn is an independent scholar specializing in art and architectural history\, design and preservation\, and was weekly Antiques columnist at The New York Times\, 2008—2016. She contributes regularly to the Times\, The Magazine Antiques\, Apollo\, and Atlas Obscura.

SUMMARY:A Chance To Unpack
DESCRIPTION:A Live Zoom Webinar series designed to hold taboo discussions unpacking the experiences of ABC scholars within affluent white spaces; with the goal of formulating concrete actions to improve inclusivity for all. \nDay 1 – What is ABC?\nWe will go beyond the ABC mission statement\, beyond the veil of success\, and dive deep into the inner workings of the program and the house through the POV of the Alumni. How can we further improve this unique system that has been nurturing BIPOC young men and women in the New Canaan and Fairfield county communities? This is a chance to listen\, judgement free and shame free. \nDay 2 – A Look Into NCHS\nWe will come to understand the individual experiences of attending New Canaan High School as an ABC scholar; everything from classes\, to extra-curricular activities\, to the predominantly white social culture. How do we increase safe spaces within the high school where BIPOC students can be authentic? This is a chance to reckon\, working out the balance of what has been helpful and what needs further adjustment. \nDay 3 – Allies and Friends\nWe will converse with those considered to be allies and friends\, dissecting what those two words mean for the scholars and for the New Canaan community. Can we identify what actions are needed from allies and friends to adequately integrate scholars into the community? This is a chance to heal\, to provide clarity\, to challenge and to thank.
