SUMMARY:Toward a More Walkable New Canaan by Jeff Speck
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library welcomes national city planning expert Jeff Speck\, who has spent his career studying what makes cities thrive and has boiled it down to one key factor: walkability. From economists and environmentalists to preservationists\, planners\, and parents\, all agree that walkable communities are better in just about every way.\nJeff Speck is an award-winning planner who co-authored Suburban Nation (Wall Street Journal calls it “the urbanist’s bible”)\, and wrote Walkable City\, the best-selling city-planning title of the past decade\, translated into eight languages. His TED talks and YouTube videos have been viewed six million+ times. Speck has been named a fellow of both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Congress for New Urbanism. In a recent Planetizen poll\, he was voted one of the ten “most influential urbanists of all time.” Mr. Speck was the 2022 recipient of the Seaside Prize\, whose former awardees include Jane Jacobs and Christopher Alexander.\nThis program is co-sponsored by a coalition of community partners: Planet New Canaan\, the New Canaan Conservation Commission\, New Canaan Community Foundation\, New Canaan Library\, the New Canaan Garden Club\, New Canaan Land Trust\, the Glass House\, New Canaan Beautification League\, and Grace Farms.

SUMMARY:The Promise of Diplomacy with Former Ambassador to Vietnam\, Ted Osius
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the World Affairs Council of Connecticut\, Ambassador Ted Osius\, former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam 2014-17\, will discuss relations between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and how the current U.S.-Vietnam relationship exemplifies the power of diplomacy in ensuring peace.\nThe conversation will be followed by a reception and a book signing of Ambassador Osius’ latest book: Nothing is Impossible: America’s Reconciliation with Vietnam.\nIn Nothing is Impossible Ted Osius\, former ambassador during the Obama administration\, offers a vivid account of the various forms of diplomacy that made this reconciliation possible. He considers the leaders who put aside past traumas to work on creating a brighter future\, including senators John McCain and John Kerry\, two Vietnam veterans and ideological opponents who set aside their differences for a greater cause\, and Pete Peterson—the former POW who became the first U.S. ambassador to a new Vietnam.\nFormer ambassador Ted Osius is President & CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council.  Founded in 1984\, the Council represents 180 of the largest American businesses in Southeast Asia through its headquarters in Washington\, DC\, and its seven regional offices.
