SUMMARY:Author Talk: Fred Landman Presents Sleepy Cat Farm
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library presents a talk by Fred Landman\, author and owner of the magnificent Sleepy Car Farm estate in Greenwich\, Connecticut. Sleepy Cat Farm is the vision of Fred Landman\, who acquired the handsome Georgian Revival house and grounds in 1994. Deeply committed to the concept of harmony between house and garden\, he has dedicated himself to the landscape to create “a garden of which the house could be proud”. His book\, Sleepy Cat Farm: A Gardener’s Journey is an illustrated tour of this lavish estate.\nSleepy Cat Farm’s mission is to instill public awareness of horticulture\, landscape architecture\, and the value of plants in our lives. It is a collaboration with esteemed Greenwich architect Charles Hilton and celebrated landscape architect Charles J. Stick who\, with Landman\, created an abundance of garden experiences across the 13 acres of land—formal boxwood and hornbeam hedges\, dense woodland\, reflecting pools\, arbors and follies—and a “ferme ornée” offering organic produce to the community.

SUMMARY:The West Side Story Story - Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Few Broadway musicals have had as much impact as West Side Story. Accompanied by musical clips\, Professor Gil Harel will explore the phenomenon of West Side Story. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet\, this modern tale of forbidden love was a collaboration between some of the biggest names in the genre\, including Bernstein\, Sondheim\, Laurents\, Robbins\, and more. With at least eight revivals since its 1957 premier\, West Side Story is as topical as ever. Professor Harel will examine the legacy of this remarkable work – how it came together\, how it has evolved and remained relevant\, and finally\, how the story has been and might be adapted in future incarnations.\nGil Harel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from western classical repertoire to jazz and musical theater. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College (where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”). Currently\, he is an Associate Professor of Music at Naugatuck Valley Community College\, where he has been presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 5 consecutive years.
