SUMMARY:New Canaan Library’s 14th Annual Literary Luncheon Welcomes Bestselling Author Martha Hall Kelly\, Speaking on Latest Novel\, Sunflower Sisters
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is delighted to once again welcome guests to an in-person setting for its Annual Literary Luncheon. Continuing the tradition of featuring respected and award-winning authors\, the 14th Annual Literary Luncheon presents The New York Times bestselling author Martha Hall Kelly as guest speaker. Ms. Kelly\, well known for her impeccably researched historical fiction\, will be speaking about her latest novel\, Sunflower Sisters. The event will be held on Thursday\, November 4\, 2021\, at 11 a.m. at the Woodway Country Club\, Darien\, Connecticut. Information on individual tickets and Benefactor tickets/tables is available on the Library’s website\, newcanaanlibrary.org/literary luncheon.\nInspired by true accounts and written with an emphasis on vivid\, realistic depictions of the Civil War experience\, Sunflower Sisters tells the story of three women from vastly different backgrounds. Their lives intersect as they move in directions they had never imagined\, defying the roles society assigned them. Readers meet Georgeanna Woolsey\, a young woman of social stature who follows her passion to become a Union battlefield nurse\, and Jemma\, a young\, enslaved woman who is sold off from her family and conscripted into the Union army. In different ways both their lives are intertwined with Anne-May Wilson\, a Southern plantation mistress torn between Union and Confederacy allegiance who enters into a life of espionage. Ms. Kelly’s beautifully written story powerfully illustrates a particularly disturbing time in America’s history\, bringing it to life through the eyes of three very strong women. Many of the themes addressed in the book are still relevant today.\nThe Literary Luncheon’s online auction in support of the Library has become a popular tradition and will once again be an exciting aspect of the event. A few highlights of this year’s offerings include a peaceful sunset cruise out of Stamford Harbor Point Marina for up to 8 people\, sailed by a seasoned captain on a Jeanneau 64’ sailboat\, an Art Basel trip to Miami Beach donated by Artful Jaunts\, and a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience via a cooking class for 6 to 8 people with celebrated Cordon Bleu chef Silvia Baldini\, winner of Food Network’s Chopped. Knowledgeable and passionate about sustainable food and the use of wholesome ingredients and traditional wisdom\, Baldini’s recipes have been published in numerous culinary publications and major media outlets\, and she has been featured in Forbes\, Tech Crunch\, Entrepreneurial Chef\, among others. Other items and experiences on the auction roster include Caramoor arts center tickets\, a family photo package\, guided tour of NYC art galleries\, 6 months of gorgeous floral arrangements\, gardening and planting lessons\, horseback riding lessons\, and a custom created piece of art.\nGenerous corporate sponsorship this year comes from Bankwell\, Saxe + Bryan Properties\, Turner Construction Company\, Artful Jaunts\, LLC\, Centerbrook Architects and Planners\, Clarke\, DEANE\, Inc\, Lampert Toohey & Rucci\, LLC\, New Canaan Racquet Club\, Rand Insurance\, Reynolds + Rowella\, and Springboard Travel. Once again\, Moffly Media is the exclusive media sponsor for the event.\nThe Literary Luncheon is the Library’s biggest annual fundraiser\, welcoming more than 400 guests for bestselling authors such as Alice Hoffman (2020)\, Delia Owens (2019)\, Jennifer Egan (2018)\, Amor Towles (2017)\, Paula McLain (2016) and Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony Doerr (2015).

SUMMARY:Jean-Michel Basquiat is Topic of New Canaan Library’s Stoddard Art Lecture\, Delivered by Professor Jordana Moore Saggese
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library’s 11th Stoddard Art Lecture welcomes author and professor Jordana Moore Saggese\, an internationally recognized expert on the work of painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. Professor Saggese will speak about his life and work through the lens of her most recently published book\, The Jean-Michel Basquiat Reader. The live webinar will take place on Tuesday\, November 16\, at 7 PM EST. Please register online by clicking on the event on the Library’s Events Calendar. Zoom sign in information will be provided upon registration.\nThe Jean-Michel Basquiat Reader is the first comprehensive sourcebook on the artist\, closing gaps that have until now limited the sustained study and definitive archiving of his work and its impact. Professor Saggese will discuss her book\, the result of more than two decades of work on this iconic American artist.\nEight years after his first exhibition\, Basquiat was dead\, but his popularity has only grown. Through a combination of interviews with the artist\, criticism from the artist’s lifetime and immediately after\, previously unpublished research by the author\, and a selection of the most important critical essays on the artist’s work\, this collection provides a full picture of the artist’s views on art and culture\, his working process\, and the critical significance of his work both then and now.\nJordana Moore Saggese is an Associate Professor of American Art at the University of Maryland\, College Park and the former Editor-in-Chief of the College Art Association’s Art Journal. She was previously Associate Professor of Contemporary Art & Theory at California College of the Arts. Trained as an art historian\, Saggese’s work focuses on modern and contemporary American art with an emphasis on the expressions and theorizations of blackness. She is an internationally recognized expert on the work of the American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88). The Jean-Michel Basquiat Reader: Writings\, Interviews\, and Critical Responses was published in March 2021 by the University of California Press. \nThe Stoddard Art Lecture series was established in the fall of 2011 to enrich and broaden the community’s understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts in all its forms. The Stoddard Lecture is unique in that it is endowed; once the fund reaches a certain point from contributions the series will operate in perpetuity. It is indeed a lasting gift\, honoring lifelong learners\, benefiting others\, and improving the Library.

SUMMARY:Bestselling Author Sonia Purnell Speaks on Her Latest Book\, A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II\, Via Live Webinar from New Canaan Library
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library welcomes The New York Times bestselling author Sonia Purnell\, who will speak via live webinar from London about her latest book\, A Woman of No Importance. This remarkable true narrative tells the story of Virginia Hall\, an unrecognized but highly impactful World War II heroine who established intricate spy networks throughout France and became vital to the Resistance movement. The webinar takes place on Thursday\, November 18 at 6:30 PM EST. Please register at newcanaanlibrary.org for Zoom sign in information.\nBased on new and extensive research\, Sonia Purnell has for the first time uncovered the full secret life of Virginia Hall\, an astounding and inspiring story of heroism\, spy craft\, resistance\, and personal triumph over shocking adversity.\nIn 1942\, the Gestapo would stop at nothing to track down a mysterious ‘limping lady’ who had eluded its clutches in her fight for the freedom of France. Consumed with rage at her daring\, Nazi chiefs issued a simple but urgent command: ‘She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her.’ The Gestapo’s target was Virginia Hall\, a glamorous American with a wooden leg who broke through the barriers against her gender and disability to be the first woman to infiltrate Vichy France for the SOE and change the course of the intelligence war.\nSonia Purnell is a highly acclaimed author\, journalist\, and broadcaster. Her first book\, Just Boris\, was longlisted for the Orwell Prize; her second\, First Lady (Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill in the U.S.)\, was shortlisted for the Plutarch Prize. Her third book\, A Woman of No Importance\, was a NYT bestseller and won the Plutarch Prize for Biography. Sonia writes for several newspapers and is a regular broadcaster in Britain and abroad. She lives in London.
