SUMMARY:“The Listening Space\,” a New Series from New Canaan Library\, Launches with Communication Workshop by Community Mindfulness Project
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library is pleased to introduce “The Listening Space\,” a new series offering programs and workshops aimed at building greater understanding and lessening polarization. The first program in the series will be offered by New Canaan’s Community Mindfulness Project (CMP)\, presenting a two-part workshop “Mindful Listening and Speaking” via live Zoom webinar. This is CMP’s most popular workshop for a reason! \nFor the most beneficial experience\, participants are asked to commit to both sessions: Wednesday\, June 2 and Thursday\, June 3 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM EST. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org; Zoom links will be sent upon registration.\nNow more than ever\, it is important to learn how to listen to each other and to feel comfortable expressing yourself. The Community Mindfulness Project invites all to experience what it is like to be truly listened to\, and to listen deeply to others\, through an interactive workshop that will change the way one thinks about dialogue\, and leave the participant feeling empowered to listen openly and speak openly on any topic. \nEstablished by New Canaan Library in the spring of 2021\, “The Listening Space” offers an inclusive forum and public programs centered on active listening and storytelling between people with differing beliefs and identities\, with the goal of building greater understanding and minimizing prejudice and polarization.\nThe next event in the series will be “A Community Debate\, Moderated by Braver Angels\,” slated for Thursday\, June 10 at 7 PM EST. Through a poll conducted during the online registration process\, organizers will select a debate topic that will spark a lively discussion. All adults are invited to take part in the virtual community debate\, facilitated by Braver Angels and New Canaan Library\, with support from the Community Mindfulness Project. For more information\, please check the Library’s events calendar at newcanaanlibrary.org. \nSince 2016\, Braver Angels has been hosting workshops\, debates\, and community conversations in an effort to depolarize politics.\nFormed in 2014\, the Community Mindfulness Project’s mission is to offer a variety of mindfulness and heart-opening practices to help people support their physical\, psychological\, emotional\, and social well-being.

SUMMARY:Authors @ NCL Welcomes Elon Green\, Introducing his True-Crime Account\, Last Call: A True Story of Love\, Lust\, and Murder in Queer New York
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Library welcomes journalist Elon Green for a discussion of Last Call: A True Story of Love\, Lust\, and Murder in Queer New York\, his gripping nonfiction book that details the investigations and search for a serial killer preying upon the gay community during the early 1990s. The live webinar will take place on Monday\, June 14 at 7 PM EST via videoconference. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org for zoom sign in information. \nIn the 1980s and early 1990s the “Last Call serial killer” preyed upon gay men in the New York area and left their remains in rest areas across three states. In this true crime drama\, journalist Elon Green meticulously reports on the investigations by detectives from New York\, New Jersey\, Pennsylvania\, and Maine. He draws on the accounts from friends and family of the victims\, lending insight into the victims’ lives and the rise of the LGBTQ community to join with the police to find the killer. A “terrific\, harrowing\, true-crime account of an elusive serial killer who preyed upon gay men in the 1990s.” -The New York Times \nElon Green has written for The New York Times Magazine\, The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, and The Columbia Journalism Review\, and appears in the true-crime anthology Unspeakable Acts.
