SUMMARY:New Canaan Nature Center's Adopt-a-Tree Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Don’t get stuck indoors this winter! Get outside for some quality family time by adopting a tree for maple syrup season! This season-long program begins with the Adopt a Tree Kickoff Event on February 3rd where syrup families/groups come for one time block to learn the process and take part in choosing and tapping a tree for the season (takes approx. 30 minutes).\nAfter the Kickoff Event\, participants will then collect sap 1-3 times a week (depending on sap flow conditions) for the entire syrup season (typically 4-6 weeks) and take part in boil downs where REAL maple syrup is made right here at NCNC.\nYou’ll even get your very own bottle of NCNC-made maple syrup at our end of season celebration in March (date TBD).\n$90/family\nPre-registration opens January 8th and is required: https://newcanaannature.org/adopt-a-tree/\nRegister for one of four timeslots to tap your tree: 9:30am\, 11am\, 12:30pm or 2pm

SUMMARY:Annual Collaboration Concert
DESCRIPTION:The New Canaan High School band\, choir and orchestra programs will perform a collaborative concert on Tuesday\, February 6 at 7:00pm it the NCHS Auditorium. NCHS Music teachers Leo Ficks\, Sarah Gleason and Barry Zhou have been working with their students during the past month preparing for this concert that will feature over 140 of our high school musicians. Although each group performs regularly throughout the school year\, they always look forward to joining forces in this annual celebration of collaborative music-making.\nThis year\, the finale piece will be Sogno di Volare (The Dream of Flight) by Christopher Tin\, which was written as the soundtrack theme for the video game Civilization VI. The piece uses Leonardo Da Vinci’s writings to celebrate human exceptionalism through the ages\, based on the concept of physical and intellectual exploration.\nEach ensemble will perform a piece from their first semester work\, as well as additional collaborations throughout the concert\, including student accompanists and our own Music Tech instructor\, Mr. Ben Kibbey. A chamber orchestra quartet has been working with the Madrigal Ensemble to present Glow\, a reflective piece by Eric Whitacre commissioned for the Disneyland World of Color – Winter Dreams Show. Also featured is March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz\, a collaboration between band and orchestra students.\nPlease join the NCHS Music Department to celebrate the talent and hard work of these student musicians!\nThis event is free to the public\, no pre-registration required.
