Japanese Woodblock: Carving Printing and Methods

$100In this three part demonstration, Kevin Frances will be showing how to create a woodblock print, printed in the Japanese style with water-based inks. In the first session, participants will be shown how to transfer drawings onto the woodblock, and how to carve the block using hand tools. Part two will be focused on reviewing paper and inks in preparation of printing the woodblock. Part three will introduce methods beyond carving and printing such as; multi plate registration, tool selection and upkeep, and the Japanese style of mounting papers-either gluing a thin sheet to a thicker piece of paper for display, or collaging papers for creative effect. After each demo, Kevin will be sharing images to help with participant notes , and will be available for questions and troubleshooting via email.
Please note, this is a 3 part workshop, taking place on 3 different days via Zoom.

KEVIN FRANCES is an artist who lives and works in Boston, MA. He received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013, and his BA from the University of California, Davis in 2010. In 2012 he was a participant at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been show at the International Print Center New York, David Krut Projects in New York, the Kala Gallery in Berkeley, CA, and the Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis.
