More than 53 million Americans over the age of 12 have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last 12 months, according to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics.
What’s even more shocking: Five percent of 8th-grade students in the U.S. have used an illegal drug in the last 30 days. By the 10th-grade, that figure balloons to 20 percent.
The statistics above highlight the importance of an event such as New Canaan’s fifth Community Addiction Awareness Vigil on Wednesday, September 1st. The one-hour celebration of understanding, healing, and hope is hosted by the New Canaan Parent Support Group and the New Canaan Community Foundation and will get started at 7 p.m at the Pop-Up Park along South Avenue.
Music will be followed by four in-recovery speakers who will share their lived experiences. The candlelight vigil will be led by local clergy.
The event is free and open to the public. If rain postpones the event Wednesday night, it will be held rain or shine on Thursday. Go here for more information or call (203) 584-6373.
