Kicks off your weekend on Saturday, September 7th, with two notable events to celebrate the Bristow Bird Sanctuary at the New Canaan Library. The day begins at 2:30 PM with the New Canaan Land Trust’s Annual Meeting, followed by a presentation from David Sibley at 3:15 PM. Sibley, renowned for his expertise in ornithology, will present “What It’s Like to be a Bird,” offering a unique perspective on avian life.

After the presentation, there will be a wine and cheese reception from 4:15 PM, where attendees can meet Sibley and have their books signed. This segment of the weekend provides an excellent opportunity for bird enthusiasts and community members to engage with one of the leading figures in bird conservation and enjoy an evening of networking and learning.

On Sunday, September 8th, New Canaan will mark a significant milestone: the 100th birthday of the Bristow Bird Sanctuary, one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in the United States. The centennial celebration will be held at the Center Crossing Pavilion in Bristow Park, starting at 2:00 PM. The event will feature an inspiring keynote address by David Sibley, who will share insights on the importance of preserving bird habitats throughout the Northeast.

Attendees can enjoy a range of activities, including a performance by the Harmonia V Woodwind Quintet featuring compositions by Gwyneth Walker, a bird release, and a special unveiling of a new Francis of Assisi statue. The celebration also includes performances by the New Canaan High School Madrigals and unique auction items crafted from the Mighty Oak Tree, which fell last year. Families are encouraged to attend, and refreshments will be served. Free registration is available and recommended.
